This restoration was the first phase of work at the Capitol. During the restoration, the original plaster that was damaged by water over a period of time was replaced. All of the peeling paint from years of painting was removed and the surfaces were re-primed. The frames of the windows at the base of the dome were removed and the glass was re-glazed and sealed to prevent water intrusion. After the repairs were complete all of the flat and molded plaster was painted in what was determined to be the original paint scheme of 14 colors. Decorative glazing was added to highlight the detail in the molded plaster to be more visible as some of this detailed work is approximately 120 feet from the first floor rotunda. During this project the original winch used to raise and lower the 3,000 pound chandelier and chain was also replaced with a new mechanical winch and platform.
